Motihari: The wife of a serving police officer has alleged that she was harassed at a Saraswati Puja pandal and later assaulted along with her husband during a robbery at their home in Motihari district, in an incident that has sparked concern over public safety in the area.
According to the complaint, the woman had gone to offer prayers at a puja pandal in the Chhota Bariyarpur locality on Friday when a group of men allegedly misbehaved with her and verbally abused her inside the religious venue. When she resisted, the situation reportedly escalated, with the accused threatening her husband and continuing their aggressive conduct.
The family alleges that the same group returned later that night and knocked on the door of their rented house. After forcing entry, the men allegedly assaulted the police officer and looted Rs 50,000 in cash from an almirah. The attackers also reportedly attempted to push the officer from the rooftop and snatched his mobile phone before fleeing the scene.
A written complaint has been lodged at Chhatauni police station. Station House Officer Mrityunjay Kumar said the application has been received and an investigation is underway. He added that a first information report will be registered and efforts are being made to identify and arrest the accused using CCTV footage, witness statements and mobile location data.
The incident has left residents of the neighbourhood shaken, with many demanding immediate action from authorities. Locals said harassment of a woman at a religious event points to a serious lapse in security and raises broader concerns about women’s safety. Police officials have assured that those responsible will face strict legal action.
