Patna: Fresh from his victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election, Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has shifted his focus to expanding the party’s grassroots presence, announcing plans to contest the upcoming Bihar Panchayat elections and strengthen the organisation across the state.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Kishor said the Bankipur contest was about more than winning a single Assembly seat.

“This election was not just about electing an MLA. It was about sending a message all the way to Delhi,” he said.

Panchayat Polls Next On Jan Suraaj’s Agenda

Kishor said Jan Suraaj would now concentrate on the upcoming Panchayat elections, which are expected to be the party’s next major electoral test.

He said the party intends to contest the elections extensively and aims to secure the Chairperson’s post in every Zila Parishad across Bihar.

Jan Suraaj also plans to field party-backed candidates in all Zila Parishad constituencies and ward-level elections, seeking to expand its organisational network beyond Assembly politics.

‘Bankipur Has Broken Political Myths’

Reflecting on the by-election result, Kishor described it as a turning point for Bihar’s politics.

He said the outcome had challenged the belief that politics in the state was permanently shaped by caste equations or confined to the two dominant political blocs.

According to him, the result offers encouragement to young people seeking to enter politics outside traditional political structures.

Panchayat Elections May Be Delayed

The tenure of Bihar’s three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions is due to end this year.

Although the State Election Commission had earlier indicated that Panchayat elections could be held in November or December 2026, the Bihar government has since decided to undertake a delimitation exercise for Panchayat constituencies.

Political observers believe the elections for Gram Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis and Zila Parishads are likely to be conducted only after the delimitation process is completed, potentially delaying the polls.

MLC Polls Also On The Horizon

Jan Suraaj is also expected to keep a close watch on elections to eight Bihar Legislative Council (MLC) seats whose terms expire in November 2026.

The vacancies include four Teachers’ Constituencies—Patna, Tirhut, Darbhanga and Saran—and four Graduate Constituencies—Patna, Tirhut, Darbhanga and Kosi.

While Kishor did not directly announce the party’s strategy for the MLC elections, political observers expect Jan Suraaj to field or support candidates in the contests.

‘Visible Change In Bankipur Within Three Months’

Kishor also reiterated his commitment to delivering visible development in Bankipur following his election victory.

He said residents would begin to see tangible improvements within the next three months, while acknowledging that transforming the constituency into a city like Bengaluru was not an immediate possibility.

Instead, he said his goal was to develop Bankipur into a model Assembly constituency over the next one to two years, demonstrating what an elected representative can achieve and creating democratic pressure on other legislators across Bihar to improve governance and public service delivery.
