Nalanda: Renowned economist and policy thinker Professor Sachin Chaturvedi formally assumed office yesterday as the new Vice Chancellor of Nalanda University. The university, a global initiative to revive the legacy of the ancient Nalanda Mahavihara, welcomed Prof. Chaturvedi with a warm reception by Interim Vice Chancellor Prof. Abhay K. Singh, faculty members, and PhD students.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Chaturvedi invoked the university’s guiding motto, “Aano Bhadrah Kratavo Yantu Vishwatah” (“Let noble thoughts come to us from every side”), and said, “This verse connects us with our eternal values. Nalanda has always stood for an open, inclusive intellectual tradition—one that fosters vibrant dialogue rooted in Indian knowledge systems and enriched by global perspectives.”
Prof. Chaturvedi currently also serves as Director General of RIS, a New Delhi-based policy think tank, and has been a leading voice in development economics, South-South cooperation, and public policy. He has authored more than 22 books and helped establish international platforms like NeST and FIDC, bringing global recognition to India’s development outlook. He also serves as an Independent Director on the Board of the Reserve Bank of India.
Reflecting on the university’s recent trajectory, he noted, “In recent years, Nalanda has carved a niche as a distinctive academic institution. Its vibrant academic environment enables students to experience multifaceted intellectual growth under the guidance of distinguished faculty.”
He also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Nalanda University, stating, “The Prime Minister’s visit has infused fresh energy into Nalanda’s vision. It underscores the enduring inspiration that Nalanda holds, especially across Asia.”
Expressing his deep commitment to his new role, Prof. Chaturvedi remarked, “Education is one of the most powerful tools for transformation. Based on my experience in economics, international cooperation, and policymaking, I believe Nalanda can contribute meaningfully to making India’s knowledge traditions impactful and socially relevant.”
He concluded by calling his appointment “a matter of great pride and honour,” and expressed his confidence that through collective efforts, Nalanda would “emerge as a vibrant centre of global discourse.”
