Patna: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission and the ruling BJP on the third day of his ongoing Voter Adhikaar Yatra in Bihar. Speaking to a crowd in Barbigha, Sheikhpura district, Gandhi accused the Nitish Kumar government of coming to power through vote theft in the last assembly elections. He added that, should his party form the next government, the Election Commission would be held accountable.
Addressing the role of the Election Commission in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Gandhi alleged that similar irregularities had occurred in Maharashtra, claiming the BJP manipulated assembly elections despite Congress’ success in the Lok Sabha polls. “Congress won in the Lok Sabha, but BJP turned the tables by adding one crore new voters in the assembly elections,” he said.

Gandhi further criticised the BJP for undermining the rights of the poor, saying, “When the vote is lost, the ration card will be lost, then the land, and whatever is left after that will also be lost.” He insisted that evidence would emerge proving Bihar’s last assembly election had been “stolen” and warned Election Commission officials that they would face consequences under a Congress government.
The Voter Adhikaar Yatra, which began in Sasaram on August 17, is scheduled to conclude with a large public gathering in Patna on September 1. The Congress-led initiative aims to raise awareness about alleged vote manipulation and voter list deletions by the NDA government and the Election Commission.
The opposition has claimed that 6.5 million names were removed from Bihar’s updated voter list, an allegation rejected by the Election Commission, which insisted that the deletions were based on legitimate grounds.
