Patna: Cricket fans in Bihar are expected to witness their first major match at the new International Cricket Stadium in Rajgir from December 2026, as construction of the venue enters its final phase. The state Sports Department has set a December deadline for completing the project, which is designed to host national and international cricket fixtures.
Spread across nearly 90 acres in Nalanda district, the stadium is being developed as part of the Rajgir Sports Complex and is intended to provide Bihar with world-class cricket infrastructure for the first time.
Construction Nears Completion
According to the Sports Department, the stadium’s main pavilion, with a seating capacity of 40,000 spectators, has already been completed. Work on the remaining three spectator stands is progressing, with construction agencies directed to complete the project within the stipulated timeline.
Officials said preparations are underway to ensure the venue is ready to host its inaugural match in December.
Government Targets December Debut
State Sports Minister Shreyasi Singh said the Rajgir International Cricket Stadium represents a significant milestone for sports development in Bihar.
She said the stadium would not only strengthen the state’s sporting infrastructure but also provide a platform for Bihar’s cricketers while enabling the state to host national and international competitions in the future.
International-Standard Facilities
The stadium is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 633 crore and will feature facilities that meet international standards. These include floodlights, electronic scoreboards, corporate boxes, a VIP gallery, a media centre, modern dressing rooms, practice pitches and an advanced drainage system.
Officials said red soil has been used for the main wicket, while black soil has been laid on the practice pitches to replicate international playing conditions.
Boost for Bihar Cricket
Once operational, the stadium is expected to benefit players from Bihar by providing access to high-quality training and competitive opportunities within the state. It is also expected to support sports tourism, create employment and contribute to the local sports economy.
The Rajgir Sports Complex also includes facilities for hockey, athletics, swimming, shooting, kabaddi and wrestling, positioning the complex as one of Bihar’s largest multi-sport centres.
