Siwan: Ram Babu Singh, a BSF jawan from Siwan district in Bihar, was martyred during cross-border firing by Pakistani forces along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir. The 26-year-old soldier had been married only three months earlier. His death, part of the ongoing Operation Sindoor, has cast a shadow of grief over his native village, Vasilpur, where his body will be brought on Wednesday for final rites with full state honours.
Ram Babu had dreamt of serving the nation since childhood, say his family members. He was posted to the conflict zone shortly after his February 2025 wedding. The news of his martyrdom on Monday plunged the village into mourning, even as it sparked a wave of pride for his sacrifice.
The soldier’s father, Ramvichar Singh, had passed away earlier. His widow, still reeling from the shock, told local reporters that she is devastated but proud of her husband’s bravery.
The funeral will be attended by army officials and district authorities. His father-in-law said arrangements are being made for a state funeral, and the body is expected to reach Siwan by Wednesday afternoon.
This marks the second such tragedy in recent days. Mohammad Imtiaz, another jawan from Saran district, was also martyred in Pakistani firing and buried in his native village on Monday.
Chief Minister offers condolences and compensation
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep sorrow at the loss, stating, “The country will always remember Ram Babu Singh’s sacrifice. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family.”
The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 50 lakh for the martyr’s next of kin and confirmed that his last rites will be conducted with full police honours. Kumar also urged citizens to stand in solidarity with the soldier’s family during this difficult time.
Villagers of Vasilpur say Ram Babu’s legacy will live on in the heart of Bihar and the nation.
