Patna: Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has announced a statewide protest on October 1, 2024, against what it calls a “loot” in the name of smart meters. Addressing a press conference, RJD State President Jagdanand Singh criticized the Bihar government’s decision to install smart meters across the state, demanding that the process be stopped immediately in the interest of the poor, villagers, and the general public.

According to Singh, the installation of smart meters, which began in 2019, has led to higher electricity bills for consumers. He alleged that private companies, including Adani Energy Solution Private Limited and Nagarjuna Construction Company, have benefited from this scheme through bribes to government officials. Singh further accused the state government of prioritizing corporate profits over the welfare of the people.

Singh highlighted that many households, especially in rural areas, are struggling to pay their bills due to the malfunctioning of smart meters. He cited data from the caste census showing that a significant portion of the population in Bihar survives on meager incomes, with around 35 percent of families earning less than ₹6,000 a month. Singh also pointed out that the majority of the rural population lacks access to smartphones, making it difficult for them to adapt to the new system.

RJD has called for a third-party review committee to examine the relevance and flaws of smart meters. Singh emphasized that the people of Bihar are facing immense difficulties, and the party will continue to fight for their rights both on the streets and in the legislature.

The RJD’s protest will take place at block headquarters across Bihar, and the party has also reiterated its demand for the fulfillment of the 200-unit free electricity promise made by Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav.
