Samastipur/Patna: In one of the biggest bank heists in recent memory in Bihar, a group of armed robbers looted gold worth Rs 5 crore and Rs 15 lakh in cash from the Bank of Maharashtra’s Kashipur branch in Samastipur district on Wednesday afternoon.
According to officials, the robbers, disguised as customers, entered the bank under the Town police station jurisdiction and overpowered the staff at gunpoint. After seizing the valuables, they also took the mobile phones of the employees before escaping from the scene.
Soon after the robbery, local police arrived at the scene, followed by Sadar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sanjay Kumar Pandey. Speaking to reporters, DSP Pandey confirmed that police checkpoints had been set up across the city and surveillance had been tightened in an attempt to track down the culprits.
“The area has been sealed, and check posts are operational in multiple locations. Every aspect of the crime is under investigation, and the CCTV footage from the bank is being closely examined,” Pandey said, adding that efforts to estimate the total value of the stolen items are underway.
The incident has raised serious concerns about bank security in the region, even as police expressed confidence that the robbers would be identified and arrested soon.
