Patna: Work towards establishing air connectivity in Saharsa has gained momentum with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) issuing a Rs 42.52 crore tender for the development and upgradation of Saharsa Airport.
Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary announced the development in a post on X, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and saying the project would help extend air connectivity across the Kosi region.
Tender For Airport Development
The AAI tender covers the development and upgradation of Saharsa Airport, marking a key step towards improving infrastructure required for regular flight operations.
Construction-related activity is expected to progress after the tendering process, subject to the completion of the required land acquisition and other formalities.
State Government To Provide Land
The Bihar government is providing around 12 acres, or 4.95705 hectares, of land on the western side of the airport to facilitate runway expansion.
Administrative approval for the land acquisition, estimated at Rs 147,76,56,180, was granted in April. The majority of the identified land is residential, with the state government bearing the acquisition cost.
Saharsa Under UDAN Scheme
The Bihar government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation signed an agreement on June 30, 2025, to include Saharsa Airport under the Centre’s UDAN regional connectivity scheme.
The proposed air link is expected to improve access to the Kosi and surrounding regions, with potential benefits for tourism, trade, education, healthcare and employment.
Land Acquisition Underway
The District Land Acquisition Department has identified 67 land parcels, known as khesras, in Nariyar Mauja under the Bangaon Revenue Police Station area, Police Station No. 190, in Kahra block.
A list of 174 landowners, or raiyats, has been released as part of the acquisition process. Authorities are addressing claims and objections before preparing the final list.
Expected Regional Benefits
The airport project is intended to provide faster travel options for residents of Saharsa and neighbouring areas while improving regional connectivity.
The proposed infrastructure could also support local businesses and tourism and provide easier access to healthcare and educational institutions.
Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary described the development as a significant achievement for the Kosi region and said air connectivity to Saharsa and surrounding areas would become possible after the tendering and land acquisition processes are completed.
