Patna: With temperatures in Bihar hovering around 41°C, demand for the traditional drink sattu has increased sharply across Patna and other parts of the state as residents seek relief from the ongoing heatwave.
Crowds have been gathering at sattu stalls from morning until evening, particularly in busy market areas and roadside locations. Many consumers are opting for the drink as a low-cost alternative to packaged cold beverages and soft drinks.
Made primarily from roasted gram, sattu is widely consumed during summer in Bihar and eastern India. Vendors and health practitioners say the drink helps maintain hydration and provides energy during extreme heat conditions.
Vendors Report Higher Footfall
Kaushal Kishore, who runs a sattu stall near Raja Bazaar in Patna, said customer numbers have increased significantly in recent weeks.
He said sattu helps cool the stomach and provides energy during hot weather. According to him, adding lemon and spices to the drink makes it more effective in reducing discomfort caused by heat and dehydration.
Local residents said they have increasingly turned to sattu during the heatwave, describing it as a natural energy drink that helps reduce weakness and prevents dehydration.
Ayurvedic Experts Highlight Health Benefits
Vaidya Dr Shivaditya Thakur, superintendent of the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital, said adequate intake of water, oral rehydration solution (ORS), and traditional summer beverages remains essential during extreme heat.
He said sattu has emerged as a preferred choice because of its nutritional value and accessibility. According to him, the drink is commonly prepared by mixing sattu with water, salt, sugar, cumin seeds, and roasted ajwain powder.
Dr Thakur added that sattu contains protein and can support hydration during summer months, when dehydration becomes common due to excessive heat exposure.
Sales Rise By Up To 40%
Ajay Gupta, president of the Bihar State Traders Association, said sales of gram-based sattu have increased by up to 40% with the rise in temperatures across the state.
He said sattu is currently being sold at prices between Rs 140 and Rs 160 per kilogram. Alongside packaged products, locally milled sattu is also witnessing strong demand from consumers.
Traders said the combination of affordability, availability, and perceived health benefits has contributed to the surge in sales during the summer season.
