Patna: The chairman-cum-managing director of Bihar State Power Holding Company Limited has directed officials to complete smart metering, distribution transformer (DT) metering and consumer tagging across the state by March 31, setting a firm deadline for the ongoing power sector reforms.
At a review meeting held at Vidyut Bhawan on Thursday, the energy secretary, Manoj Kumar Singh (IAS), assessed the progress of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) works with service providers and senior officials of the two power distribution companies. The meeting focused on the current status of smart meters, system metering, DT metering and the accuracy of consumer tagging.
Senior representatives from the utilities, including the managing director of South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, were present along with officials from implementing agencies. According to officials, discussions centred on bridging gaps in execution and accelerating field-level deployment to meet the end-of-March target.
Singh stressed that consumer tagging must achieve 100% accuracy, describing it as critical to ensuring reliable billing and reducing technical and commercial losses. He directed all superintending engineers to conduct 10% random verification of DT metering and consumer tagging work to maintain quality and accountability.
The state power utility said the push for timely completion and stricter verification is aimed at strengthening transparency in the smart metering ecosystem. Officials believe that accurate metering and tagging will improve load management, streamline billing processes and enhance overall efficiency in electricity distribution.
