Patna: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the alleged deletion of confidential data from the computer systems of the Bihar Legislative Council, in a case that has raised serious questions about cyber security and administrative integrity within the state’s top legislative body.The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar Police, which is leading the investigation, formed the SIT following instructions from EOU Additional Director General Nayyar Hasnain Khan. The six-member team will be headed by Cyber Superintendent of Police D Amarkesh and will focus on uncovering how and why sensitive information was erased from the Council’s official database.
The issue came to light after it was discovered that confidential data had been wiped from computers within the office of Legislative Council Chairman Awadhesh Narayan Singh. Describing the breach as a “serious incident,” Singh has publicly called for strict action against those responsible.
An FIR had already been registered by the EOU against six employees of the Legislative Council. With the SIT now in place, officials are aiming to conduct a deeper forensic examination of the case. A hard disk believed to have stored the deleted data is currently being analysed by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), with hopes that crucial information can be recovered and the method of the breach traced.While the EOU has not officially confirmed the nature of the files, sources within the Council suggest that the deleted data may include sensitive policy documents and records related to staff promotions. If confirmed, the breach could have significant implications for the internal functioning and transparency of the Council.
