Patna: A special MP-MLA court has ordered the release of former Begusarai MP Surajbhan Singh in connection with a 1996 murder case, citing lack of evidence.
The judgment was delivered by special judge Brajesh Kumar Singh, bringing an end to a case that had been pending for nearly three decades.
Case Background
The case relates to the killing of Ranjit, a resident of Bihat village under Barauni police station in Begusarai district, who was allegedly shot dead on July 29, 1996.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place at the residence of one Sitaram Engineer, with several individuals named as accused.
While Surajbhan Singh’s name did not appear in the initial FIR filed by the victim’s father, it was later included during the investigation.
Court Findings
During the trial, the prosecution presented seven witnesses. However, officials said none of them supported the case in court.
In the absence of corroborative evidence, the court ruled that the charges could not be sustained and ordered Singh’s release.
Senior advocate Mohammad Mansoor Alam, representing Singh, argued that the case lacked substantive evidence linking his client to the crime.
