Patna: A video showing the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tej Pratap Yadav interrupting a stage performance at a Makar Sankranti dahi-chura feast in Patna has gone viral, prompting debate over propriety, politics and family dynamics in Bihar.
The event, hosted by Yadav to mark the harvest festival, included a cultural programme. Footage circulating on social media shows him approaching the stage and asking a female singer to stop performing, saying that “vulgar” songs would not be tolerated and urging her to sing devotional music instead. In the clip, he is also heard objecting to songs focused on caste identity and asking for a devotional song.
Yadav later justified the intervention by saying the programme had featured repeated “indecent” songs that were inappropriate for a religious and traditional gathering. The incident quickly became a talking point online and among political rivals.
The presence of Yadav’s father, Lalu Prasad, the RJD chief, added to the political buzz. It was their first public appearance together since reports of a rift that had seen Tej Pratap distanced from party and family affairs, fuelling speculation that relations may be thawing.
According to party sources, Tej Pratap had visited the home of his mother, Rabri Devi, a day earlier to invite family members, including his brother Tejashwi Yadav, to the feast. Several relatives and local leaders were also present during that visit, which observers described as politically significant.
Tejashwi Yadav, however, did not attend the event, an absence that drew its own scrutiny. Meanwhile, the attendance of Vijay Sinha surprised many and added another layer of intrigue.
Taken together, the viral video, the emphasis on tradition and the shifting optics of a prominent political family have ensured that Tej Pratap Yadav’s dahi-chura feast remains at the centre of Bihar’s political conversation.
