Patna: The Jan Shakti Janata Dal (JJD) has intensified its attack on the Bihar government after its national president and former minister Tej Pratap Yadav was remanded to 14-day judicial custody in connection with a case registered during last week’s student protest in Patna.
Calling the arrest “unconstitutional” and “undemocratic”, the party on Sunday demanded Yadav’s immediate release and the withdrawal of all criminal cases against him. His lawyer said a bail application would be moved before the court on Monday.
Party Alleges Political Targeting
In a statement, JJD national media in-charge Mishal Sinha alleged that Yadav had been peacefully supporting students’ demands during the Bihar Bandh when he was detained late on Saturday without prior notice or due legal procedure.
Sinha claimed the action was an attack on democratic values and warned that the party would launch a statewide democratic and legal agitation if the government failed to withdraw the cases and release those arrested.
He further alleged that false cases were being used to suppress voices supporting the students’ movement, adding that peaceful protest was a constitutional right of every citizen and elected representative.
These allegations have not been independently verified, and the state government had not publicly responded to the claims at the time of writing.
Bail Plea To Be Filed
Yadav’s lawyer, Jagannath Singh, questioned the manner of the arrest, alleging procedural irregularities.
He said a bail application would be filed before the court on Monday.

Police have accused Yadav of inciting protesters, damaging public property and obstructing government officials during violence that broke out in Patna during the Bihar Bandh on Saturday.
An FIR was registered at Gandhi Maidan police station, following which he was produced before a court and sent to Beur Central Jail in judicial custody late that night.
Shifted To Jail Hospital Ward
According to jail authorities, Yadav has been lodged in the hospital ward instead of a general barrack after complaining of chest discomfort.
Officials said his condition is being monitored continuously and all prescribed medical and security protocols are being followed.
Jail sources said he declined to eat the chuda (flattened rice) served on Saturday night under the prison manual and also skipped breakfast on Sunday morning.
Although he initially refused lunch as well, officials said he later accepted a meal consisting of roti, rice and vegetables after being persuaded by jail staff.
The jail administration said all necessary arrangements had been made for his health, security and ongoing medical observation.
