Training Programme at Bihar Agricultural University Promotes Millets Cultivation and Value Addition

Sabour: A three-day training programme on millets production technology, processing, value addition, and marketing strategies was held at Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, from March 21 to 23 under the aegis of the Millets Value Chain Excellence Centre. The initiative aimed to equip farmers and entrepreneurs with modern techniques to enhance millet cultivation and profitability.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Mukesh Kumar Sinha, Principal of Bihar Agricultural College, Bhagalpur, who highlighted the economic, nutritional, and environmental benefits of millet farming. He urged farmers to adopt modern techniques to increase production and contribute to nutritional security.
Millets: A Sustainable and Profitable Crop
Addressing the trainees, Dr. Mahesh Kumar Singh emphasized that the programme would help farmers and entrepreneurs maximize production and profits by leveraging innovative agricultural practices. He noted that millets are a rich source of nutrition and climate-resilient, making them vital for sustainable agriculture.
Participants were introduced to value-added millet products, marketing strategies, and export potential. Experts encouraged the adoption of scientific methods in millet cultivation to improve yield and market value.
The training featured interactive sessions, expert talks, and field visits to millet production units, offering participants practical insights into advanced farming techniques, disease management, nutrient management, and value addition.
Empowering Farmers and Entrepreneurs
In the closing ceremony, Dr. A.K. Sah, Dean of Agriculture at BAU Sabour, underscored the health and economic advantages of millets, stating that adopting millet-based enterprises could boost farmers’ income while promoting a healthier diet.
A total of 57 trainees participated in the programme, benefiting from technical guidance provided by agricultural scientists, including Dr. Birendra Singh, Dr. Anand Kumar, Dr. Dharmendra Verma, Dr. Amrendra Kumar, Dr. Hariom, Dr. Pankaj Kumar, and Dr. Prem Prakash.
Organizers believe such training programmes will play a crucial role in expanding millet cultivation, strengthening farmers’ financial stability, and enhancing the market potential of millets as a nutrient-rich and sustainable crop.
