Sasaram/Patna: Two children have died and one remains missing after five youngsters drowned while bathing in the Son river near Bandu village in Bihar’s Rohtas district on Saturday evening.
The children, who had gathered with their families for a griha pravesh (housewarming) ceremony at the newly built home of Naresh Kahar, had gone to bathe in the river at around 4pm. According to villagers, the tragedy unfolded when a girl ventured into deeper waters and began drowning, prompting the others to attempt a rescue — only to be swept away themselves.
Locals managed to save two children, Palak Kumari, aged six, and Mohit Kumar, also six, after a desperate rescue effort. Both have been admitted to hospital, where their condition remains critical.
The bodies of two girls, Manisha Kumari, 12, from Japla in Jharkhand, and Ruchi Kumari, 17, from Aurangabad district, were later recovered by villagers. Search operations are ongoing for Divya Kumari, who is still missing.
Police and administrative officials rushed to the scene. Chandrashekhar Sharma, the officer in charge of Nauhatta police station, confirmed that the bodies of two girls had been found and that efforts to locate the third child are continuing.
