Patna: Indian cricket has discovered a new prodigy at the Under-19 World Cup in Bulawayo, where 14-year-old opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi rewrote the record books during a group-stage match against Bangladesh. Suryavanshi scored 72, becoming the fastest Indian to cross 1,000 runs in youth one-day internationals.
The innings carried historical weight. Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest modern batters, had scored 978 runs in 24 youth ODI innings between 2006 and 2008. Suryavanshi moved past that mark in just his 20th match, having entered the game with 975 runs from 19 innings. His achievement places him among the youngest players to reach the milestone.
With this knock, Suryavanshi joins an elite group of Indian batters who have scored more than 1,000 runs in youth ODIs. The list includes Vijay Zol, who leads the charts with 1,404 runs, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tanmay Srivastava, Unmukt Chand, Shubman Gill and Sarfaraz Khan. For many, Suryavanshi’s early entry into this company is a sign of rare potential.
In the match itself, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl. India were 119 for four in 28 overs when Suryavanshi was dismissed, caught by Al Fahad off Iqbal Hossain, ending a promising partnership. Other Indian batters, including Ayush Mhatre, Vedant Trivedi and Vihan Malhotra, failed to make significant contributions.
Suryavanshi’s rise has not been limited to Under-19 cricket. In eight List A matches, he has scored 353 runs at an average of 44, including a blistering 190. Across 18 T20 games, he has accumulated 701 runs at an average of 41 and a strike rate exceeding 200, and already holds the record for the fastest century by an Indian in the IPL.
