Vaishali: A doctor couple was killed in a crash between their car and a truck near the Patedha toll plaza on NH-22, in the Sarai police station area of Hajipur, early on Saturday morning. The couple’s driver was seriously injured, while their pet dog survived the collision unharmed.
The accident occurred around 4am as the car, carrying Dr Jitendra Prasad, 60, and his wife Jyotsna Prasad, 52, was travelling from Araria to Patna to visit the couple’s ailing mother-in-law. Witnesses alerted the Sarai police, who arrived at the scene and extricated the victims and the injured driver, Sanjay Kumar Sudhanshu, before rushing them to Sadar Hospital.
Doctors at the hospital declared the couple dead on arrival. Sudhanshu, a resident of Araria, was admitted for treatment. The truck driver involved in the crash reportedly fled the scene.
Dr Jitendra Prasad, who had worked at Araria Sadar Hospital for over 15 years and served twice as its in-charge superintendent, was known for his contributions to maternal and neonatal healthcare. Both he and his wife had recently been recognised by Bihar’s Health Department for performing 334 successful C-section operations between January and August 2025, a feat praised by Health Minister Mangal Pandey as an example of dedication to service.
The couple’s two sons are also in the medical profession: the elder works at a government hospital in Maharashtra, while the younger has completed his medical studies.
Hospital staff, including Civil Surgeon Dr Shyamnandan Prasad and Superintendent Dr Gudiya Kumari, paid tribute to the couple at Sadar Hospital before the bodies were taken to their native village in Sheikhpura district.
“Upon receiving information about the accident, the police reached the spot and all the injured were taken to the hospital. After examination, the doctor couple was declared dead. The damaged car has been brought to the police station, and the matter is being investigated,” said Manibhushan Kumar, Station House Officer of Sarai Police Station.
