Patna: Vijay Kumar Choudhary, a long-time loyalist of Nitish Kumar, was sworn in as deputy chief minister of Bihar on Wednesday, reaffirming his central role in the state’s political and administrative landscape.
A senior figure within the Janata Dal (United), Choudhary is widely regarded as one of the party’s key strategists and a trusted confidant of Nitish Kumar.
Early life and education
Born on January 8, 1957, in Samastipur district, Choudhary comes from a political family. His father, Jagdish Prasad Choudhary, was a prominent leader.
He completed his postgraduation in history from Patna University before beginning his professional career at the State Bank of India. He later entered politics, influenced by his family’s legacy.
Political journey and rise
Choudhary began his political career after his father’s death, gaining early success by winning from the Dalsingsarai constituency. He was elected as an MLA for three consecutive terms and initially belonged to the Congress.
His decision to join the JD(U) in 2005 marked a turning point. He went on to win from the Sarairanjan constituency in 2010 and has since retained a strong electoral record.
Within the party, he rose through the ranks to serve as spokesperson and later as state president, cementing his position as a key organisational figure.
Ministerial and legislative roles
Over the years, Choudhary has handled several important portfolios, including finance, education, agriculture and rural development.
He also served as Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2015 to 2020. Prior to his elevation as deputy chief minister, he was serving as minister for water resources and parliamentary affairs.
Clean image and administrative experience
Choudhary is considered to have a clean public image, with no criminal cases against him, according to his election affidavits. His assets are valued in crores, with a gradual increase reported over time.
Known for his composed demeanour and administrative acumen, he is often described as a balanced and pragmatic leader.
Key role in JD(U) and Bihar politics
Within the JD(U), Choudhary is frequently referred to as part of the party’s “think tank”, playing a significant role in policy formulation and governance.
His proximity to Nitish Kumar and experience across both government and organisation have made him a pivotal figure in Bihar politics, a role that is expected to continue as he assumes office as deputy chief minister.
