Motihari/Patna: Authorities in Bihar’s East Champaran district are investigating the discovery of a vulture fitted with a GPS tracker and a microchip camera, after villagers captured the bird in Madhubani Bardaha, a village under Mufassil police station.

The unusual incident unfolded on Saturday when locals, noticing a vulture in their area after a long time, approached and captured it. Upon closer inspection, they found electronic devices attached to its body, prompting them to alert the police.

The Mufassil police arrived at the scene and informed the forest department, which later rescued the bird. “The vulture has a camera and a chip attached to its body. We have handed it over to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) in Valmikinagar for further investigation,” said Motihari Range Officer Narayan Lal Sevak.

East Champaran Superintendent of Police Swarn Prabhat suggested the vulture may have originated from a conservation centre in Nepal, where birds are often tagged for tracking. “There is a possibility that the vulture was numbered and tagged as part of a conservation effort. However, we are investigating the matter,” he said.

The discovery has unsettled villagers, with many suspecting a larger conspiracy. “When we saw the electronic devices, we got scared. We immediately called the police because we thought something suspicious was going on,” a local resident said.
