Patna: A shocking and heartbreaking incident has come to light from Bihar, where the family of a young married woman blocked a busy highway by placing her body on the road to demand justice. The protest took place on Tuesday near Khirodharpur village on the Patna–Bakhtiyarpur State Highway-106. The woman, identified as Khushi Kumari, had been married for only five months. Her sudden death has raised serious questions, as her family claims that she was murdered by her in-laws and that her death was falsely shown as a suicide.
Khushi’s brother, Gautam Kumar, said that his sister had married Rajesh through a love marriage. He explained that the first two months after the wedding were peaceful and there were no major problems. However, because it was an inter-caste marriage, Rajesh’s family was unhappy with the relationship from the beginning. Gautam said that when Khushi and Rajesh returned to Khirodharpur from Delhi, her in-laws began to harass her. According to him, they repeatedly demanded money and other items, and this harassment soon turned into physical and mental torture.
The family further alleged that the situation became worse just before Khushi’s death. Gautam said that his sister was badly beaten by her in-laws one day before the family received the news of her death on Monday. He strongly believes that Khushi did not take her own life, but was strangled by her in-laws. The family claims that after killing her, they hung her body to make it look like a suicide and escape punishment. After the incident, the in-laws reportedly fled and are currently absconding.
When the police received information about the road blockade, Khusrupur Police Station SHO Sanjeev Kumar Singh reached the spot with his team. He spoke to the grieving family and assured them that a fair investigation would be carried out. After his assurance, the family removed the body from the road and the traffic was restored. The SHO said that at first glance the case appears to be a suicide, but because the family has accused the in-laws of dowry harassment and murder, the police are investigating the case from all angles. He added that the real cause of death will be confirmed only after the post-mortem report.
The tragic death of Khushi Kumari has once again highlighted the serious issue of dowry-related violence in the country. Despite strict laws, many women continue to suffer in silence after marriage. Khushi’s family is now hoping that justice will be done and that her story will serve as a warning so that no other woman has to lose her life in such a cruel way.
