Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar marked Independence Day with a significant announcement, saying that the government plans to provide a total of 12 lakh jobs and 34 lakh employment opportunities in Bihar. Speaking at the flag-hoisting ceremony at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, where he unfurled the tricolour for the 18th time—setting a record for the state—the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s progress in job creation and outlined future targets.

In 2022, Kumar had pledged to create 10 lakh jobs, a promise he reiterated during his Independence Day address. He reported that 5.16 lakh jobs have already been delivered, with the recruitment process for an additional 2 lakh positions nearing completion. The new target, set before the upcoming assembly elections, raises the job creation goal from 10 lakh to 12 lakh. Additionally, the government aims to provide 10 lakh more employment opportunities, bringing the total to 34 lakh jobs by next year.

Kumar took the occasion to review the achievements of his administration, contrasting them with the practices of political rivals. In a pointed reference to the Lalu Prasad Yadav family, he criticised the practice of promoting family members to positions of power, saying, “Some people make their wives the CM and can’t think beyond their family.”

The Independence Day ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav, and BJP State President Dilip Jaiswal, among others. The event was conducted under tight security, with adjustments made to the city’s traffic system to accommodate the celebrations.

Meanwhile, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav extended their Independence Day wishes, with Lalu Prasad Yadav hoisting the national flag at his residence.

  • 🚨 A Class 11 student in Patna was allegedly abducted and assaulted by fellow students outside St. Michael’s High School on Thursday. Police say the student was reportedly forced into an SUV, taken to a Ganga riverbank, assaulted, and later released near the school. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from an earlier dispute between students rather than a ransom kidnapping. An FIR has been registered against three accused, the vehicle has been seized, and police are examining CCTV footage as the investigation continues.

  • 🚧 Bihar has approved a new toll policy for state highways that links toll charges to road width. Roads narrower than 5.5 metres and stretches passing through municipal areas will remain toll-free, while wider four-lane and six-lane highways, including the JP Ganga Path and the Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur bridge, will attract higher user charges. The government says the revised system aims to create a sustainable funding model for road maintenance while reducing the burden on commuters using smaller and urban roads.

  • 🚨 The Income Tax Department is probing an alleged ₹6,000-crore tax evasion scheme linked to donations made to certain unrecognised political parties. Investigators suspect that some donors claimed tax deductions under Section 80GGC after making bank transfers, while a large portion of the donated amount was allegedly returned through unofficial channels. The probe is ongoing, and no findings of wrongdoing have been established by any court. Officials say any legal action will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation.

  • 🩺 Former intern doctors at GMCH Purnea staged a protest after alleging that their stipends for the last four months remain unpaid even after completing their internship on June 25. They also opposed being asked to vacate the hostel before receiving their dues, saying it has created financial hardship. The college administration said the delay was due to technical reasons and assured that the pending stipend is likely to be credited within the next one or two days, while maintaining that hostel rooms must be vacated as per institutional rules to accommodate the incoming batch of interns.
