IGIMS PG Medical Student Found Dead in Suspected Suicide, Investigation Underway

Patna: Dr. Aryan, a second-year postgraduate student in the radiology department at Patna’s Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), was found dead at his home in Shivaji Nagar, Digha, on Tuesday. The 29-year-old’s body was discovered hanging in the kitchen, raising concerns and disbelief among his family and friends.

According to sources, Aryan had wished his elder sister Dimpy a happy birthday a day before his death. He told her that her gift would be on credit and had planned to stay with his family starting the New Year. On Monday evening, Aryan returned to his house in Shivaji Nagar, where he rarely stayed, as he typically lived in a rented room in Raja Bazar near IGIMS. His parents were away in their ancestral village at the time.

Close relatives and friends expressed shock at the incident, describing Aryan as a high achiever and a well-behaved individual with no known issues. His cousin Sanjay said, “He was a topper in the PG entrance exam, an outstanding student, and a good human being. He had no bad habits and no financial pressure. This is unimaginable.”

Aryan was the youngest member of his family. His sister works as a clerk in the defence sector, his brother-in-law is a railway engineer, and his father recently retired from the State Bank of India. His mother, a government employee, was set to retire on December 31.

Sanjay recounted his last conversation with Aryan on Monday evening, during which Aryan expressed concern about his cousin’s lung problem and spoke of seeking treatment with a good doctor. “He never spoke about any personal problems,” Sanjay added.

On Tuesday morning, when Aryan’s friends were unable to reach him, they called the tenant of the Shivaji Nagar house. Despite repeated attempts, the door remained locked. The friends forced it open and found Aryan’s body in the kitchen.

Police have initiated an investigation into the incident. Law and Order DSP-2 Dinesh Pandey said, “The body was handed over to the family after a post-mortem. Initial findings indicate suicide, but further investigation, including examination of Aryan’s mobile, call details, and WhatsApp chats, is underway to determine the reasons.”

Aryan, an alumnus of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), was highly regarded for his academic brilliance. He had identified a lung condition in his brother-in-law and had been proactive about arranging treatment.

The tragedy has left many questions unanswered, with family members alternating between their ancestral home in Supaul and a residence in Saharsa. Meanwhile, the medical and academic community at IGIMS is reeling from the loss of one of its most promising students.
