Patna: New Year celebrations in Bihar will coincide with a sharp dip in temperatures as the state braces for a severe cold spell starting January 1. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of falling mercury levels and intensified fog, raising concerns about public health and safety. Although no cold wave alert is currently in place, conditions may deteriorate as minimum temperatures drop below normal levels.
Cold westerly winds to drive chill
S.K. Patel, a scientist at the Patna Meteorological Center, attributed the impending cold to a strong western disturbance, which has triggered heavy snowfall in the Himalayan region. “The winds descending from the mountains will bring severe cold to Bihar. The minimum temperature is expected to drop by 2 to 4 degrees on December 31 and January 1,” Patel explained.
January is expected to bring biting cold, with dense fog likely in the mornings and evenings. However, winds may help clear fog during the day, allowing occasional sunshine. Partial cloud cover may intermittently obscure the sun, adding to the chill, Patel added.
Health risks for vulnerable groups
The sudden drop in temperatures is expected to disproportionately affect children and the elderly, with rising cases of cold-related illnesses reported. Health experts have warned of heightened risks for individuals with cardiovascular conditions or high blood pressure.
Children are also more susceptible to cold-related ailments such as diarrhea, while elderly individuals face a greater risk of complications from existing health conditions.
Precautions urged amid cold wave threat
The IMD has urged residents to prepare for the cold wave, advising the use of warm clothing and avoiding prolonged exposure to the cold. With dense fog expected to impact visibility, the public has also been cautioned about travel disruptions.
