Bihar Government to Introduce Hi-Tech Computer Training for Prisoners Across 41 Jails

Patna: The Bihar government is taking a significant step toward skill development and rehabilitation of prisoners by introducing computer training programs across 41 jails in the state. The Home Department’s Prison and Correctional Services Inspectorate has approved Rs 2.25 crore for the initiative, which includes the procurement of 250 computer sets, UPS systems, and computer tables.

High-Tech Training in Eight Central Jails

The program will cover inmates in eight central jails, including Adarsh Central Jail Beur, which will receive the highest allocation of 15 computer sets. Central and special jails in Buxar, Motihari, Muzaffarpur, Purnia, Bhagalpur, and Gaya will each receive 10 computer sets. Additionally, 33 divisional jails will be equipped with five computer sets each.

This initiative is part of a broader campaign to link prisoners to employment opportunities through skill development. According to officials, batches of inmates will undergo computer training to develop practical knowledge and digital literacy, improving their employability post-release.

Focus on Rehabilitation and Skill Development

“This is a key step toward rehabilitating prisoners by providing them with essential skills for reintegration into society. The training will create pathways for gainful employment and reduce recidivism,” said a senior official from the Home Department.

New Sub-Jail to be Built in Bhagalpur

In a parallel development, the Home Department has sanctioned Rs 5.04 crore for the construction of a sub-jail in Kahalgaon subdivision of Bhagalpur district. The funds will be used to acquire 14.70 acres of Raiti land in Salempur Mauja, with the responsibility assigned to the Bhagalpur District Magistrate.

This allocation adds to the Rs 14.85 crore and Rs 1.96 crore released earlier in two installments for the project, highlighting the government’s commitment to improving correctional infrastructure in the state.

Transforming Correctional Facilities

The dual initiatives underscore Bihar’s focus on modernizing correctional facilities and ensuring that prisoners have access to programs that promote rehabilitation and self-reliance. By investing in technology and infrastructure, the state aims to create a more progressive correctional system.
