Patna: A robbery at the residence of the late Kameshwar Chaupal, a prominent BJP leader and Ram Janmabhoomi Nirman trustee has resulted in the theft of over Rs 50 lakh worth of cash and jewellery. The incident occurred on February 20 in New Mahavir Colony, Beur in Patna, while the family was away for the ‘shraddha karma’ ceremony following Chaupal’s death.
Chaupal’s daughter-in-law, Meenakshi Kumari, reported that the family had travelled to their native village in Supaul for the religious rites, leaving the house locked. Upon their return late on the evening of February 20, they discovered the break-in. “All the rooms were ransacked, the locks are broken, and valuables including cash and jewellery from the cupboard were missing,” Kumari said.
Kameshwar Chaupal’s son, Vidyanand Vivek, has filed a formal complaint with the Beur police. Officers have begun an investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area for potential leads.
Chaupal, a respected figure in the BJP and the RSS, passed away on February 6 at the age of 77 after a prolonged battle with health issues. He had undergone a successful kidney transplant in August 2024, with his daughter Leela Devi donating one of her kidneys. However, complications from infections followed his recovery, leading to his hospitalization in Delhi’s Gangaram Hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his illness.
Known for his role in the Ram Mandir movement, Chaupal was one of the first to lay a brick for the construction of the temple in Ayodhya. He was also recognised by the RSS as ‘Pratham Kar Sevak’ (First Volunteer). Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing him as a “Unique Ram Bhakt” upon news of his passing.
