Sabour: A three-day residential training programme on millet production and value-added processing concluded on Friday at Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour. Organised under the Centre of Excellence for Millets Value Chain Project, the training ran from March 19 to 21, equipping around 50 farmers with skills in millet cultivation, seed production, pest and disease management, genetic improvement, weed control, and value-added product development.

The programme also focused on entrepreneurship opportunities in the millet sector, highlighting employment prospects for women. Addressing the closing ceremony, Dr Mukesh Kumar Sinha, principal of Agricultural College, Sabour, stressed the importance of millet cultivation and processing to enhance market access. He also advocated incorporating millets into daily diets to promote sustainable agriculture and nutrition.

Dr Mahesh Kumar Singh, the principal investigator of the project, outlined the advantages of integrating millet into modern farming systems. He predicted that high-yielding millet varieties could offer more profitability than traditional crops like paddy in the coming years.

Several scientists involved in the project, including Dr Amrendra Kumar, Dr Virendra Singh, Dr Anand Kumar, Dr Neha Pandey, Dr Dharmendra Verma, and Dr Prem Prakash, attended the event.

The training aligns with India’s broader efforts to promote millet as a climate-resilient crop and boost its role in food security and economic sustainability.
