Patna : Rahul Gandhi will hold a crucial meeting with district presidents of the Bihar Congress in Delhi on Friday as the party gears up for the upcoming state assembly elections. The meeting marks a fresh attempt to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level after the recent overhaul of leadership within the state unit.
Congress Pushes for Organisational Revival
Over the past months, the Bihar Congress has undergone significant restructuring, with new appointments at various levels. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary, KC Venugopal, issued letters confirming the selection of 40 district and working presidents late on Monday. These leaders will leave for Delhi today ahead of the strategy session with Gandhi.
The discussion is expected to focus on preparations for the elections and the role of the newly appointed district committees in candidate selection. The District Congress Committees (DCCs) will have a key say in finalising the party’s nominees for the polls, marking a shift towards decentralised decision-making.
Efforts to Rebuild a Lost Base
For nearly three decades, the Congress has played a secondary role in Bihar’s politics, aligning with the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Analysts argue that this dependence weakened the party’s independent structure at the district level. With this latest reorganisation, Gandhi is seeking to rebuild the party’s presence and reconnect with its traditional voter base, including Dalits, upper castes, and minorities.
However, political observers remain sceptical about the Congress’s ability to regain lost ground. Senior journalist Sunil Pandey noted that while Gandhi’s renewed focus is evident, mobilising young workers remains a major challenge.
“The Congress is trying to regain its foothold in Bihar, but it won’t be easy. The party lacks a strong connection with the youth, which is crucial for any political revival,” Sunil Pandey said.
