Patna: A state-level review meeting of the Directorate of Fisheries was held in Patna on Wednesday to assess the progress of state and centrally sponsored schemes and to outline new strategies to strengthen Bihar’s fisheries sector. Chaired by Animal and Fisheries Resources Minister Renu Devi and conducted by Additional Chief Secretary Dr N. Vijayalakshmi, the meeting brought together district fisheries officers from across the state.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Vijayalakshmi emphasised the need for Bihar to transition from being merely a production-focused state to a key player in fish exports. She directed officials to constitute a dedicated committee to draw up a concrete action plan for establishing an export-oriented unit. “Export is the next frontier, and Bihar must be ready with surplus production and infrastructure to support it,” she said.
The meeting also reviewed the successful implementation of the cluster model in the Chaur area of Madhubani, recommending its expansion to other districts. Officers were instructed to ensure proper maintenance of fisheries infrastructure and adopt innovative practices.
Minister Renu Devi urged officials to prioritise completion of construction projects before the onset of monsoon and to ensure that benefits of all schemes reach the fishermen without delay. “Our goal is to make Bihar a leading state in fisheries through timely execution and community-focused initiatives,” she said.
Districts including Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Jehanabad, Samastipur and Araria were recognised for their outstanding performance in achieving targets, completing projects, and effectively implementing schemes.
Programmes reviewed included the Atmanirbhar Bihar initiative (Saat Nischay 2) and centrally sponsored schemes. Bihar currently ranks fourth in fish production nationwide, and officials were instructed to work swiftly to further improve the state’s position.
The meeting was attended by Director of Fisheries Abhishek Ranjan and other senior departmental officials.
