Patna: The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Bihar has conducted simultaneous searches at properties linked to Ajay Kumar Singh, Deputy Director of the Bihar Open Schooling and Examination Board, in connection with a disproportionate-assets case.
According to the information provided, the searches were carried out at multiple locations in Patna and Begusarai. The EOU alleges that Singh accumulated assets worth ₹3,43,78,300 in excess of his known sources of income, representing approximately 90.04% disproportionate assets.
₹30 Lakh Cash Found in Patna
A 15-member EOU team reportedly reached Chandratara Bhavan on Akashvani Road in Khajpura, Patna, at around 8:30 am on Thursday.
During the search, officials reportedly recovered ₹30 lakh in cash from the Patna residence. Jewellery, land-related documents and papers concerning investments allegedly worth crores of rupees were also found, according to the information available.
The search team also inspected the property’s basement and parking areas. Ajay Kumar Singh was reportedly present at the residence during the operation.
₹4.50 Lakh Seized From Begusarai Property
Another search was conducted at Singh’s ancestral property in Parora village under Sahebpur Kamal police station in Begusarai.
According to the details provided, approximately ₹4.50 lakh in cash was recovered from the Begusarai property. EOU officials also examined documents at a sand and cement business reportedly owned by Singh’s brother, Dharmendra Singh, in Pachveer.
Local officials, including the Ballia SDO, Sahebpur Kamal BDO and SHO, were present to oversee security arrangements during the operation.
Properties Worth Around ₹10 Crore Under Scanner
The searches have also brought several properties into focus. According to the information provided, luxurious houses or bungalows in Patna and Begusarai are estimated to be worth around ₹10 crore collectively.
The Begusarai property has reportedly come under particular scrutiny, with claims that it was constructed after Singh entered government service. The EOU is examining property records and other documents to establish the source of funds used for the assets.
Case Registered Over ₹3.43 Crore Disproportionate Assets
The EOU registered Case No. 19/26 on August 19 against Ajay Kumar Singh.
The case has been filed under Section 13(2) read with Section 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, as amended in 2018.
The action was carried out on the basis of a search warrant issued by the Special Court (Vigilance), Patna.
The agency is examining whether the assets identified during the searches are disproportionate to Singh’s known sources of income.
Previous Controversies Involving Ajay Kumar Singh
Ajay Kumar Singh has previously been associated with controversies during his tenure as District Education Officer in Muzaffarpur.
In May 2025, MLC Banshidhar Brajvasi raised questions over the non-submission of information related to payments for school development and infrastructure works. The issue followed a meeting of the District Programme Implementation Committee in Muzaffarpur.
Singh had also alleged in February 2025 that a then-BJP MLA, Ashok Kumar Singh, had threatened him after he refused to take action that he claimed was against official rules. The allegations had triggered a controversy at the time.
Investigation Continues
The EOU’s searches are part of the ongoing investigation into the alleged disproportionate assets case. Officials are examining cash, property documents, jewellery, investment records and other material recovered from the locations.
The final value and nature of the assets involved will become clearer after the searches, document verification and further investigation are completed.
