World Environment Day: LS College’s Tree Plantation Drive Celebrates Mothers and Nature

In Muzaffarpur, a unique World Environment Day campaign links tree planting with maternal tribute, fostering both ecological and emotional roots.

Muzaffarpur: To mark World Environment Day, Langat Singh College in Muzaffarpur launched a large-scale tree plantation campaign under the banner “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” — a symbolic effort intertwining environmental responsibility with a tribute to motherhood.

Bihar’s deputy chief minister, Vijay Kumar Sinha, commemorated his 57th birthday by planting 57 fruit-bearing trees, including mango, guava, and litchi, on the college premises. He was joined by Panchayati Raj minister Kedar Prasad Gupta and college principal Om Prakash Roy. In total, 200 fruit trees were planted during the event.

Addressing the gathering, Sinha underlined the importance of environmental stewardship. “Trees are the foundation of life. The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign promotes environmental protection while honouring our mothers,” he said. He announced plans to expand the initiative through panchayats with the aim of greening every village. “Planting a tree is an investment in our planet’s future. It’s our duty to protect nature, which sustains us all,” he added, calling for collective action to tackle environmental challenges.

College principal Om Prakash Roy highlighted the institution’s proactive role in environmental and social outreach. He praised the participation of students, particularly NCC cadets, in both the plantation and a parallel cleanliness drive. “This initiative raises environmental awareness and inspires students to embrace social duties,” Roy said.

The NCC cadets conducted a thorough litter-removal drive across the campus and promoted hygiene awareness among students and staff. Roy further noted the college’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through regular tree plantation, maintenance of green cover, plastic-free policies, and the promotion of solar energy.

Several local dignitaries and educators, including Uday Shankar Prasad Singh, Harimohan Chaudhary, Shashikant Pandey, Santosh Anal, Navin Kumar, Neeraj Nayan, Sujit Kumar, Rishi Kumar, Satyendra Kumar, and Sakaldev Mistry, were present at the event.

The initiative reflects a growing shift toward grassroots environmentalism, merging traditional values with urgent climate concerns.
