Lakhisarai: A major incident took place in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district when three liquor smugglers escaped from the excise police station lockup late on Tuesday night. The smugglers managed to cut the grill of the bathroom and fled, leaving the police shocked and helpless. They had been arrested earlier with 8 litres of liquor near Kiul station in Khagaur village.
The three accused were identified as Dheeraj Kumar from Mananpur, Sonu Kumar from Makdampur, and Nitesh alias Ritesh Kumar from Barhiya. After their escape, police launched a search operation in various areas. A surprising turn came when one of the fugitives, Sonu Kumar, was found after he consumed poison under pressure from his family to surrender.
Sonu had gone to Mankattha station after taking poison. When his condition got worse, his family admitted him to a private clinic for treatment and then informed the police. He was later taken into custody again. The other two smugglers are still missing, and raids are ongoing to catch them.
Senior officers, including the District Magistrate and Excise Superintendent Vibha Kumari, visited the station and reviewed the situation. Kumari confirmed that one prisoner had been re-arrested and assured that the other two would be caught soon. The escape has raised serious questions about the safety and strength of police lockups in the state.
