Patna: Authorities in Patna have suspended the driving licences of 578 motorists for violating traffic rules, as part of a wider crackdown on reckless driving in the city. The action, taken by the district transport department, follows data shared by the traffic police covering the period from January to June this year.
According to the District Transport Office (DTO), a total of 988 proposals for driving licence (DL) suspensions were submitted by the traffic police during the six-month period. Of these, 578 licences have already been suspended, while show-cause notices have been issued in the remaining cases.
In addition, nearly 900 vehicles have been flagged for potential cancellation of registration. Vehicle owners have been served notices and are required to respond before further action is taken. Notifications are being sent to the registered mobile numbers of the concerned individuals.
Repeated violations and fake documents trigger licence suspensions
The DTO confirmed that suspensions are initiated when drivers are found to be habitual offenders or if their documentation is found to be invalid or forged. If a suspended licence is discovered during inspection, vehicle owners may face fines up to Rs 5,000. Suspensions typically range from three to six months.
Patna’s District Transport Officer, Upendra Kumar Pal, noted that a majority of violations involve young drivers. “Many youths are driving carelessly, increasing the risk of accidents,” he said. “If traffic rules are violated, strict penalties—including licence suspension and vehicle registration cancellation—will follow.”
More than 30 licences cancelled in past six months
While hundreds of licences have been suspended, the transport department has gone a step further in 30 cases by fully cancelling the driving licences. Final decisions are made by the licensing authority following a hearing, where both parties are allowed to present their cases.
