Patna: The monsoon has intensified across Bihar, triggering heavy rainfall over the past three to four days and leading to flood-like conditions in multiple districts. The state has reported 17 deaths due to lightning strikes in the last 24 hours, with nine districts affected.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to moderate rainfall will continue in the southern and northeastern parts of Bihar from July 18 to 24, with similar conditions expected in parts of southern Bihar between July 25 and 30. The rest of the state may experience light showers during this period.
Death Toll and Lightning Strikes
The state witnessed heavy rainfall across 10 districts on Thursday, resulting in tragic lightning-related fatalities. The highest number of casualties was reported in Sheikhpura, where four people—including a grandmother and her grandson—lost their lives. Other lightning-related deaths include:
- Bhagalpur: 3 deaths
- Patna (Barh and Khusrupur): 2 deaths
- Rohtas (Kachhwa police station): 1 youth
- Bhojpur (Tarari): 1 woman
- Aurangabad: 1 woman and 1 youth
- Vaishali (Rajapakar): Lallan Rai (40)
- Vaishali (Baikunthpur): 1 youth (22)
- Nalanda (Asthawan): 1 elderly man died while grazing cattle; two women sustained severe burns
Flood-Like Conditions and Infrastructure Impact
Several parts of the Kaimur district are experiencing a flood-like situation due to relentless downpours in the hilly regions, submerging waterfalls and causing waterlogging on roads. In a striking image, schoolteachers were seen holding hands while wading through two feet of water to reach their destination.
In Jehanabad, the Falgu River breached its embankments at multiple points, leading to severe flooding in nearby residential areas. Homes in low-lying areas are reportedly submerged.
Weather Forecast for Patna
The capital city, Patna, witnessed light to heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. The IMD has forecast cloudy skies and the possibility of more rain on Friday. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 34–36°C, with the minimum temperature around 27°C. Winds may blow at 10–12 km/h.
Advisory for Citizens
Authorities have urged residents, especially in vulnerable rural areas, to take precautions against lightning and to avoid open fields during thunderstorms. Relief and disaster response teams have been alerted, and local administrations are monitoring river levels and embankments closely.
