Patna: A 22-year-old NEET aspirant died by suicide in a hostel in Danapur, Patna, allegedly due to distress over low exam scores. The student, Rohit Kumar Mehta, was the son of village head Pankaj Kumar Mehta from Chanvath village in Bihar’s Buxar district. He had recently married in April.
According to police, the incident occurred on Sunday evening at Sadhna Cottage Hostel. Rohit’s roommate, Aryan, returned around 8.30pm from a visit to the ISKCON temple and found the room locked from inside. Despite repeated knocks, there was no response. With the help of the hostel operator and other residents, the door was broken open. Rohit was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
The police and a forensics team arrived soon after and collected evidence from the scene. Local MLA Dr Ajit Kushwaha also visited the spot.
Rohit had been living in Patna to prepare for the NEET exam while attending classes at PhysicsWallah Institute in Bihta. His father told reporters that Rohit had been in a state of depression after receiving lower-than-expected marks in the exam. The family had been trying to support him emotionally. On the day of the incident, he had spoken to his family around 2.30pm and appeared normal.
Hostel operator Roshan Kumar said Rohit had checked in on June 3 and shared a room with Aryan. He described Rohit as a cheerful and friendly student.
