Patna: The Janata Dal (United) has issued a show cause notice to its own Member of Parliament, Girdhari Yadav, after he publicly criticised the Election Commission’s ongoing voter verification drive in Bihar. Yadav, who represents the Banka constituency, has been given 15 days to respond to the party’s notice.
The controversy stems from remarks Yadav made during an interview, in which he accused the Election Commission of lacking “practical knowledge”, stating it “neither knows the history of Bihar nor its geography”. He further claimed the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise was being imposed without consideration for the difficulties faced by rural populations, especially during the monsoon and farming season.
“It took me 10 days to gather the required documents. Imagine what farmers must be going through,” he said. Yadav, considered a close aide of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also said the SIR process should have been given at least six months. “This is my personal opinion. I don’t care what the party says,” he added.
In its notice, the JDU described the comments as “embarrassing” and said they risked legitimising “baseless and politically motivated allegations” made by the opposition, particularly in an election year.
