Muzaffarpur: B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU) is undergoing a major transformation ahead of its long-awaited convocation, scheduled for August 25. After years of neglect, the university campus is being revitalised under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Dinesh Chandra Rai, who is personally supervising the preparations.
At the heart of this overhaul is the complete renovation of the university auditorium, a building that had been lying unused and in disrepair for over 11 years. “This convocation is a moment of immense pride for our university. Renovating this long-abandoned auditorium signals our commitment to preserving existing infrastructure instead of replacing it with new construction,” Prof Rai said.
A series of beautification and infrastructure projects are also underway. Paver blocks are being laid along the main road near the university police station to address issues of waterlogging during the monsoon season. Repairs have also begun on a long-neglected water tank.
Cultural motifs are playing a central role in the university’s visual transformation. “We have decided to decorate the walls with designs celebrating the region’s iconic Shahi Litchi and vibrant Mithila paintings. This is our tribute to Muzaffarpur’s rich cultural and agricultural heritage,” Prof Rai added.
The university will also honour two distinguished former faculty members by instituting medals in the names of Prof Ram Bihari Singh (Economics) and Prof Nawalkishore Sinha (Political Science), recognising their academic contributions.
The convocation ceremony is expected to be a high-profile event, with the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, and the Governor of Bihar, Arif Mohammad Khan, set to attend. Degrees and medals will be awarded to 54 outstanding postgraduate and PhD students.
Despite the scale of the preparations, Prof Rai emphasised the importance of financial restraint. “While we aim to organise a dignified and memorable celebration, we are consciously avoiding unnecessary extravagance. The focus is on efficient and meaningful use of funds,” he said.
