Bhagalpur: Bhagalpur district in Bihar is set to undergo a major transformation, with local authorities aiming to replicate the success of Indore, India’s cleanest city in terms of urban cleanliness and civic management. The decision came during a meeting of the empowered standing committee of the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, where a series of proposals were cleared to upgrade sanitation systems, enhance public infrastructure, and streamline city services.
Following improved performance in recent cleanliness rankings, the district will now receive additional resources, including new sanitation equipment and machinery. Officials believe this will help elevate Bhagalpur’s urban hygiene standards significantly.
Among the key decisions taken at the meeting was the strengthening of the cleaning system for the Hathiya drain — a critical step towards solving long-standing issues of waterlogging and inefficient drainage. The committee also approved the naming of the city’s night shelter as Karpoori Bhawan, in honour of former Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur.
Plans were also outlined to establish a designated “wedding zone” in the Zeromile area, aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving crowd management during events. Additionally, steps will be taken to organise local vendors more systematically.
The meeting, chaired by Mayor Dr Basundhra Lal, lasted nearly three hours and also reviewed preparations for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on 15 August. Discussions included flag-hoisting responsibilities and finalising decisions on civic advertisements to be released in print and electronic media for the occasion.
