Patna: Six police officers in Bihar have been awarded gallantry medals for their brave actions during a deadly Naxalite attack in Aurangabad in 2016. The attack left ten soldiers dead but also saw security forces fight back with determination.
The incident happened after police received information about a top Naxalite squad planning a major operation. Under the leadership of then Aurangabad SP Babu Ram, a joint combing operation was launched with the Cobra battalion. The team was moving through the foothills of Bagle mountain in Dumri Nala when Naxalites triggered a powerful IED blast.
Eight Cobra soldiers were killed on the spot, and two more died while being taken to hospital. Despite the heavy loss, the remaining forces retaliated, killing three Naxalites in the encounter.
Security personnel also recovered a large quantity of weapons and ammunition from the dead Naxalites. The gallantry medals honour the officers’ courage and dedication in the face of extreme danger.
