Patna: From September 1, silver jewellery in Bihar and elsewhere in India carry a Hallmarking Unique ID (HUID), making it easier for buyers to confirm authenticity and purity. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has rolled out the system nationwide on a voluntary basis, replacing the old hallmarking rules with the revised IS 2112:2025 standard.
The updated system allows customers to check jewellery details, including purity grade, HUID code, jeweller’s registration number and assay centre information through the BIS Care mobile app. Officials said the move will make hallmarking of silver as digital and transparent as that of gold.
Seven purity grades have been fixed under the new norms, with 958 and 999 grades included for the first time to give customers more options and assurance of quality. Earlier, only six grades were available.
Hallmarking centres in districts including Patna will provide facilities to both consumers and jewellers. BIS said the initiative is expected to protect buyers from counterfeit or low-purity silver while strengthening trust in the jewellery market.
