Patna: Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited on Friday signed a long-term power supply agreement with Adani Power Limited for a 2400 MW ultra supercritical thermal power project at Pirpainti in Bhagalpur, in what officials described as the largest energy sector investment in the state’s history.
Energy minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav said the Rs 30,000 crore project represents a milestone in Bihar’s infrastructure growth, adding that it reflects a favourable climate for large-scale private investment. Energy secretary Manoj Kumar Singh announced that the first unit is scheduled to be operational by Diwali 2028.
The state cabinet had in February 2025 appointed Bihar State Power Generation Company as the nodal agency for tendering the project. The agreement, signed in Patna, was attended by senior officials including Mahendra Kumar, managing director of the generation company.
“This is the biggest investment in the history of Bihar’s energy sector and will establish a strong environment for future industrial growth,” Yadav said.
The 2400 MW thermal plant is set to significantly augment Bihar’s electricity supply at a time when the state government has placed energy security at the centre of its development agenda.
