Patna: The Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) is under fire after failing to hold its second Inter-Level examination, despite announcing vacancies for 12,199 posts nearly two years ago. The recruitment drive, launched in September 2023 after a nine-year gap, has left more than 25 lakh applicants in limbo as the preliminary test date remains unannounced.
The posts advertised include Lower Division Clerk, Data Entry Operator, Stenographer, Panchayat Secretary, Typist and Revenue Staff. With close to 200 candidates competing for each position, frustration has mounted over the commission’s inaction.
Students have also voiced opposition to an online examination system, citing concerns over transparency and the risk of irregularities if private agencies are involved. Bihar’s recent history of paper leaks in graduate-level and CGL-3 exams has intensified calls for the test to be conducted offline, with safeguards such as OMR carbon copies, timely release of answer keys and publication of cut-off marks.
Candidates have demanded that BSSC release a clear examination calendar, similar to the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC), outlining dates for the preliminary test, mains and interviews. They are also pressing for the installation of CCTV cameras and strict monitoring at exam centres to prevent malpractice.
The delay has put pressure on chief minister Nitish Kumar’s government, with student leaders accusing it of negligence. “The government must address the concerns of the youth and conduct the examination as soon as possible, otherwise the patience of young people will completely run out,” said Dilip Kumar, a student leader. For now, the future of lakhs of aspiring candidates remains uncertain, as the wait for one of Bihar’s most anticipated recruitment exams stretches into its third year.
