Purnia: Travel from Purnia to Delhi is set to become significantly easier following the inauguration of Purnia Airport by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 15. The move marks a long-awaited expansion of the region’s aviation network and has been welcomed by local residents, who described it as a “birthday gift” from the Prime Minister.
Regular flight services began on September 17, with Indigo operating its first flight from Kolkata, carrying 66 passengers. The airline has scheduled further flights from Kolkata to Purnia on September 19, 22, 24, 26, and 29. Star Air also launched services from Ahmedabad on September 18, transporting 60 passengers to Purnia and returning with 69.
Airport Director D.P. Gupta confirmed that preparations are complete to launch flights from Purnia to Delhi in October. Efforts are also underway to connect the city to additional major destinations across India.
The introduction of air services is expected to boost trade, commerce, and tourism in the region. Star Air has already commenced flights between Ahmedabad and Purnia four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday) and between Kolkata and Purnia three days a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday), with plans to expand to daily operations in the near future.
The addition of Purnia to India’s air network signals a significant step in integrating Bihar more fully into national and international transport routes, offering new opportunities for economic growth and regional connectivity.
