Patna: The Amrit Bharat Weekly Express from Gomtinagar (Lucknow) to Malda Town was delayed in Bihar on Saturday after an engine failure and a brake malfunction caused disruption and panic among passengers.
The train came to a halt at Abhaypur station at 10:52am when its engine suddenly failed, railway officials said. The malfunction was fixed after about an hour and a quarter, and the train departed at 12:17pm, reaching Jamalpur at 12:41pm.
Shortly after, a coach experienced brake binding between Jamalpur and Sultanganj, with smoke billowing from the wheels. The incident caused alarm among passengers, some of whom feared a fire. Railway inspectors and staff quickly attended the coach, explained the cause to passengers and rectified the issue within 20 minutes.
Traffic inspector PK Rajhans said the train eventually reached Sultanganj at 1:24pm, more than 90 minutes behind schedule, and left at 1:49pm. Officials clarified that brake binding occurs when brake pads fail to fully release from the wheels, causing friction and smoke.
Despite the double setback, the train continued its journey to Malda Town after safety checks.
