PATNA: The construction of a proposed 9km elevated road in Patna, linking Beur More to AIIMS, has hit a major obstacle after the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways ordered a change in alignment.

Officials said the original design, which include a sharp 90-degree turn near Anisabad More, posed a serious accident risk. To resolve this, the ministry has directed that the road be rerouted diagonally through the Manikchand Tank area. While the revised alignment may reduce congestion and improve safety, it will require significant land acquisition in a densely populated neighbourhood.

According to estimates, more than Rs 100 crore will be needed to compensate residents whose land and homes fall under the new route. Local authorities have warned that disputes over compensation could delay the project further.

The ministry recently issued guidelines stating that funding for road projects would be sanctioned only if 100% of the required land is available. In line with this policy, approval for the Beur More–AIIMS road has been withheld. Responsibility for the project has since been transferred to the Bihar State Road Development Corporation, which has been asked to prepare a fresh detailed project report (DPR).

Officials confirmed that an earlier DPR had already been submitted, but work cannot proceed until the new plan is approved and land acquisition is completed.

  • A late-night raid at Beur Central Jail in Patna has exposed serious security lapses after officials recovered a mobile phone and data cable from inside the high-security facility. The operation, conducted between 10:50 pm and 12:45 am, is part of an intensified statewide crackdown on prison security following recent administrative directives. Authorities have increased surveillance and surprise inspections to curb illegal activities inside jails.

The raid was led by the Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer along with City Superintendent of Police Bhanu Pratap Singh and a large team of around 150 personnel. Multiple sections of the jail, including the Ganga Block, were thoroughly searched during the operation. Following the recovery of prohibited items, a warder has been suspended immediately, while several other staff members are under investigation and have been asked to explain possible negligence or involvement.

Officials stated that such drives are part of ongoing efforts to maintain discipline and prevent criminal networks from operating within prisons. The incident comes shortly after coordinated searches across 13 jails in Bihar, where other banned items were also found. The latest recovery at Beur Jail has raised fresh concerns over internal monitoring systems, signaling the possibility of deeper lapses and stricter action in the coming days.
