Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday transfer Rs 10,000 each to the bank accounts of 7.5 million women in Bihar, in a major rollout of the state government’s women’s employment scheme.

The programme, conducted via video conference, will see Modi joining from Delhi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar attending online. Women and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers across the state are expected to participate.

According to the Bihar Rural Development Department, more than 1.11 crore women have applied for the scheme. Of these, 1.07 crore “Jivika Didis” – members of rural self-help groups – registered online, while a further 1.40 lakh women sought to join new groups. More than 4.66 lakh women in urban areas have also applied.

Events are being organised across all 38 district headquarters, chaired by district officials, with at least 1,000 self-help group members attending in each district. Programmes will also take place at 534 block headquarters and 1,680 cluster-level associations, with the prime minister’s address broadcast to around 70,000 village-level locations. Officials said the initiative would be celebrated “like a festival” at the panchayat, block and district levels.

The transfer of funds marks the first instalment under the Chief Minister’s Women’s Employment Scheme, which provides financial support to women to boost participation in economic activities.

Other schemes targeting women in Bihar

The women’s employment scheme is part of a wider package of welfare measures launched under Nitish Kumar’s government, which include:

  • Divorced Women’s Assistance Scheme: One-time aid of Rs 25,000 for divorced women, including those from Muslim communities, introduced in 2007.
  • Widow and Senior Citizen Pension: Monthly pensions for widows and elderly citizens, recently increased from Rs 400 to Rs 1,100.
  • Chief Minister Girl Child Upliftment Scheme: Cash assistance of Rs 5,000 at birth, Rs 10,000 after completing Class 12, and Rs 50,000 upon graduation.
  • Chief Minister Girl Child Cycle Scheme: Rs 3,000 grant for a bicycle for girls entering Class 9, later extended to boys.
  • Chief Minister Girl Child Uniform Scheme: Annual support of Rs 600 to Rs 1,500 for school uniforms for students in Classes 1 to 12.
  • Chief Minister Girl Child Marriage Scheme: A one-time grant of Rs 50,000 for the marriage of daughters from poor families.

The Bihar government has framed these schemes as central to empowering women and reducing barriers to education, employment and social security.
