New Delhi/Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced plans to seek UNESCO recognition for the Chhath Puja, describing it as a global celebration of spiritual and cultural significance.
In the 126th episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said the festival, which honours the Sun God, is celebrated across India and increasingly recognised abroad. “Chhath is very special. Today, it has become a global festival,” he said. “Its splendor can be seen in different parts of the country as well as across the world. The central government is making significant efforts regarding the Chhath festival.”
Highlighting the broader cultural importance of Indian festivals, PM said such celebrations keep India’s heritage vibrant. “Through government efforts, Kolkata’s Durga Puja was recently included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Similarly, we are working to include Chhath Puja in this list, so people worldwide can experience its grandeur and spiritual significance,” he added.
Chhath, traditionally observed after Diwali, involves devotees offering prayers to the setting sun and performing rituals at riverbanks, lakes, and other water bodies, reflecting a deep connection to nature and devotion.
