Patna: Two legislators from Bihar have resigned from the state assembly just months before the 2025 elections, in a move that is expected to boost the BJP while dealing a blow to the opposition Grand Alliance.
Bharat Bind, who represents Bhabhua, and Sangeeta Kumari, MLA from Mohania, both in Kaimur district, tendered their resignations, which were accepted by Assembly Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav. The pair were elected on Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) tickets in 2020 but later defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The RJD had earlier sought their disqualification after they switched sides, with opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav writing to the Speaker, but no action was taken. Their formal exit now clears the path for them to seek BJP tickets in the upcoming election.
Party insiders suggest both Bind and Kumari are strong contenders to be fielded by the BJP, which is intensifying its campaign in Bihar. The Congress MLA from Chenari, Murari Gautam, has also resigned and is expected to join the BJP contest.
The resignations are seen as a setback for the opposition coalition led by the RJD and Congress, while for the BJP they mark a chance to consolidate organisational strength. With election activity accelerating, defections and shifting allegiances are reshaping the political landscape in Bihar ahead of the November polls.
