Patna: The political arena in Bihar is witnessing an eclectic mix of candidates this election season, as parties open their doors to professionals from across fields — from former IPS officers and doctors to engineers and Bhojpuri cinema personalities. The Bihar Assembly Election 2025 has turned into a confluence of technocrats, administrators and entertainers vying for public support.
According to reports, both the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, along with newer parties such as Jan Suraaj, have nominated candidates from professional backgrounds. Some, however, have chosen to contest as independents, hoping to leverage their personal credibility and popularity.
Former IPS officers join the fray
Among the notable entrants are Anand Mishra, a former IPS officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, and Sunil Kumar, a retired DGP contesting for the second time on a JD(U) ticket. Jayprakash Singh, a former ADG-ranked officer, and R.K. Mishra, retired DG, have been fielded by Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party.
Meanwhile, Shivdeep Lande, once a popular face in Bihar’s police force known for his strict law enforcement image, has taken voluntary retirement and entered the race as an independent candidate.
Doctors and medical professionals step into politics
The medical fraternity too is making its presence felt this election. Dr. Sunil Kumar from Bihar Sharif is contesting on a BJP ticket, while Dr. Sanjeev Kumar from Parbatta has also entered the fray.
Jan Suraaj has fielded as many as 16 doctors, including Dr. Arun Kumar, former director of IGIMS; Dr. Lal Babu Prasad, a senior paediatrician; Dr. Shashi Shekhar Sinha, retired medical officer; and Dr. Ajit Kumar from Gaya.
These candidates, who have built careers in healthcare, say they hope to improve public health infrastructure and bring efficiency to government systems through their experience.
Engineers and Bhojpuri film stars join the list
Several engineers have also stepped into politics this year, including Engineer Ajit Kumar from Kanti, Hemant Paswan from Barachatti, and Abhishank Kumar from Alouli.
The Bhojpuri entertainment industry has made a strong political debut too. Popular figures like Maithili Thakur, Ritesh Pandey, Seema Singh, Vinay Bihar, and Khesari Lal Yadav have been fielded by different parties, hoping to connect with Bihar’s vast cultural and linguistic base.
